Three Jalandhar athletes selected for Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026

Three athletes associated with Government Arts and Sports College, Jalandhar, have been selected to represent India at the Commonwealth Games-2026, scheduled to be held in Glasgow, Scotland.

Principal Dr Ranbir Singh congratulated the athletes on their achievement and expressed confidence that they would bring glory to both Punjab and the country through their performances on the international stage.

The selected athletes are Gurindervir Singh in the 100 metres, Tajinder Pal Singh Toor in the shot put, and Rashdeep Kaur in the women’s 4x100m relay team.

Dr Singh said the athletes’ selection reflected the institution’s rich sporting tradition and the high standard of training provided through the coaching centres of the Punjab Sports Department. He added that the college’s synthetic athletics track and modern sports infrastructure have played a significant role in nurturing athletes who have gone on to compete at national and international levels.

Highlighting the institution’s academic offerings, Dr Singh said the college currently offers programmes including BA (General), Bachelor of Physical Education and Sports (BPES), Postgraduate Diploma in Yoga, and MSc Yoga. He further announced that Integrated BSc-MSc (4+1) and BCom-MCom (4+1) programmes will be introduced from the forthcoming academic session.

Established in 1961 under the leadership of the then Chief Minister Partap Singh Kairon, the institution was originally recognised as Asia’s first sports college. Now known as Government Arts and Sports College, Jalandhar, it boasts a distinguished sporting legacy and has produced several renowned athletes, including hockey legends Surjit Singh and Harcharan Singh, popularly known as the “Flying Eagle”, as well as celebrated athletes Ishar Singh Deol and Jagdeep Singh.
