Former India captains Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and Dilip Vengsarkar are among 21 former international captains who have appealed to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for proper medical treatment and welfare of jailed former prime minister and World Cup winning captain Imran Khan.
The move has been initiated by former Australia captain Greg Chappell and marks the second letter by former international captains seeking humane treatment and proper medical care for the 73-year-old Khan.
The captains, in their letter (published on social media), urged the Pakistan government to allow the medical board directed by the Supreme Court, including Imran’s personal doctors, to complete an independent assessment of his health, particularly his reported loss of vision in the right eye.
They also called for weekly family visits, reinstated by the Supreme Court, to be honoured without interruption and for any treatment recommended by the medical assessment to be provided without delay.
The letter said the captains “did not seek to adjudicate Pakistan’s domestic legal processes but believed that ensuring a court-ordered medical process was completed was a basic matter of decency”.
The signatories also include Allan Border, Michael Atherton, Michael Brearley, Ian Chappell, Belinda Clark, Alastair Cook, Adam Gilchrist, David Gower, Kim Hughes, Nasser Hussain, Clive Lloyd, Arjuna Ranatunga, Andrew Strauss, Stephen Waugh and John Wright.
